You might not want to be a creative director. I've know many people who only wanted to advance from junior CW/AD to senior CW/AD to highly-paid CW/AD. Being a CD isn't for everyone. Especially if you don't like managing people, going to meetings or dealing with clients.
But, if you aspire to be a creative director, here's the simple advice Mark Figliulo gave me a couple years ago:
"Win as many awards as possible."
